Container Scam Prevention Tips
-
Most scams originate around E-Transfers
1. Do not pay for shipping containers with e-transfers unless you are absolutely, 100%, without any doubt in the world certain that you know who you are buying from.
Rule: If you can't go meet them in person, do not send e-transfers. -
Know your seller - Meet in person.
Stlbx and any other reputable vendors will have physical locations that you can go to and visit in person. It is not enough for a seller to send you an address and assume that is their office or container yard without being able to confirm. Go meet in person or jump into a video call.
-
Video Calls Are Great!
If you aren't able to meet the seller in person due to distance or time constraints on your end, ask the seller to jump into a quick virtual video call using google meet, zoom or teams. A quick video call gives you the opportunity to see the containers and are an amazing tool for verifying the location and business legitimacy using Google Maps.
-
Never send personal information to unsecured emails
The second most common scam in the shipping container industry is called a phishing scam. The fake vendors ask potential buyers for their personal information and then use it to impersonate the buyer and access their banking, financial information or emails.
-
Pay on delivery
If you are still worried about scams, the best and most obvious way to make sure you are getting what you paid for is to pay for it as you get it. :) Any reputable company will offer payment on delivery and if they don't provide payment on delivery, alarm bells should be ringing.
